Vitamin E is a fat soluble vitamin which covers a set of eight organic molecules, four tocopherols and four tocotrienols:
α – tocopherol δ – tocotrienol
α – tocotrienol β – tocopherol
β – tocotrienol γ – tocopherol
γ -tocotrienol (apoptotic) δ – tocopherol
Tocopherols are made of a chromanol nucleus and side chain saturated with 16 carbon atoms. Tocotrienols differ from tocopherols by the presence of three double bonds on the side chain.
The biologically form most active is d-alpha tocopherol, the most abundant in the alimentation is the y-tocopherol. These molecules are present in large quantities in vegetable oil, and also argan oil. They act in conjunction with vitamin C and glutathione essentially as antioxidants against reactive oxygen species produced in particular by the oxidation of fatty acids.
Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes, starting with those of the skin and thus helps to slow down skin aging. It also protects red blood cells against oxidative substances. Vitamin E would include preventing cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks or strokes by preventing the abnormal formation of blood clots. It would fight against certain cancers, including that of the prostate, provided not to be present excess, and also reduce the risk of intracranial hemorrhage, severe retinopathy and blindness in premature infants and the risk of cataracts, macular degeneration related to age.
